City Extends Enforcement Action for Short-Term Rental Operators

ATLANTA—The Department of City Planning is extending enforcement action for Short-Term Rental operators from June 1, 2022, to September 6, 2022, as the City has determined that implementation of Ordinance 22-0-1241 may require further consideration. The extension allows current short-term rental operators additional time to apply for the license before code enforcement begins.

The Short-term Rental Ordinance (20-0-1656) adopted on March 15, 2021, and amended in December 2021, went into effect on March 1, 2022. There is no deadline to apply for a license.

"We want to be responsive to Atlantans and communities," said Interim City Planning Commissioner Janide Sidifall. "We heard our residents asking to extend the enforcement deadline, and we listened. That is always the goal of the City: to make sure that voices are heard and acknowledged."

All property owners who use their homes for short-term rentals are required to apply for a license through the Department of City Planning's Office of Buildings.

As Atlanta is a favored city for conferences, conventions, and sporting events, the need for the ordinance grew to provide residents a way to use their homes for increased revenue as temporary housing solutions for visitors coming into the city. The Short-term Rental Ordinance allowed the City of Atlanta to establish a framework of regulations that set expectations for short-term rental operators.

"The ordinance and regulation are necessary to provide quality control in the ever-growing short-term rental industry," said Office of Buildings' Director Greg Pace. "It is a way to ensure homeowners or long-term tenants a way to legally operate a short-term rental unit and earn additional income, while providing additional ways for people to visit our city."
