ATLANTA ~ In a recent announcement, Governor Brian P. Kemp of Georgia has appointed Dr. Dean Burke as the new Commissioner of the Department of Community Health, effective August 1. This decision comes after current Commissioner Russel Carlson announced his departure to pursue a position in the private sector.

Governor Kemp expressed his gratitude to Dr. Burke for his continued dedication to serving the people of Georgia in this new leadership role. With his extensive background in medicine and healthcare policy, Dr. Burke is well-equipped to take on this important position during a crucial time for the agency. The governor has full confidence that Dr. Burke will bring the same level of commitment and expertise that he has demonstrated throughout his years of public service.

In addition, Governor Kemp also thanked Commissioner Carlson for his years of service and contributions to the Department of Community Health. He commended Carlson for his knowledge and leadership, particularly during the launch of the innovative Georgia Pathways to Coverage program. Dr. Dean Burke currently serves as the Chief Medical Officer for the Department of Community Health, where he advises the leadership team on healthcare policy and quality improvement initiatives across all divisions. He also oversees two important programs - the State Health Benefit Plan and State Office of Rural Health.

Prior to this appointment, Dr. Burke represented Senate District 11 and held various positions such as Chairman of Insurance and Labor Committee, Vice-Chairman of Health and Human Services Committee, Ethics Committee, Ex-Officio member of Agriculture and Consumer Affairs Committee, Secretary of Appropriations Committee, and member of Reapportionment and Redistricting Committee and Rules Committee. He was also Chairman of Community Health Appropriations sub-committee.

Dr. Burke's experience also includes serving on Bainbridge City Council for five years and Lower Flint Water Council before being elected to state Senate. He worked as Chief Medical Officer at Memorial Hospital and Manor in Bainbridge and chaired the Stratus Healthcare Governing Board. He was also a former member of the Hospital Authority of the City of Bainbridge and Decatur County.

Dr. Burke graduated Summa Cum Laude from Georgia Southwestern University and completed his medical education at the Medical College of Georgia. He specialized in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Mercer University School of Medicine and practiced for 27 years in rural Georgia. Dr. Burke and his wife, Thea, have two children, three grandchildren, and reside in Bainbridge.

With his extensive experience in healthcare policy and commitment to public service, Dr. Dean Burke is poised to lead the Department of Community Health towards a brighter future for the people of Georgia.
