Atlanta, GA ~ In a unanimous decision, the Georgia Forestry Commission (GFC) Board has appointed Johnny Sabo as the new Director and State Forester, effective September 1. This announcement was made by Governor Brian P. Kemp today in Atlanta, GA.

The GFC Board held an executive session on August 27 to evaluate and vote on the new Executive Secretary, Administrative Officer, and Director/State Forester following the resignation of Tim Lowrimore, who will be stepping down on September 15.

Governor Kemp expressed his confidence in Sabo's abilities to continue the good work of the GFC and ensure the success of Georgia's forestry industry. He stated, "As the No. 1 forestry state in the nation, Georgia and its forests depend on GFC for a multitude of services. Under Johnny's leadership, I am confident that mission will be fulfilled successfully."

Sabo joined GFC as Deputy Director in April 2023 after serving nearly 20 years with the Florida Forest Service. In his current role at GFC, he oversees the Forest Management, Forest Protection, and Law Enforcement departments, as well as five regions across the state where field operations are conducted.

Sabo also serves on the Georgia Forestry Foundation Board of Trustees and the Georgia Sentinel Landscape Executive Committee. He holds a bachelor's degree in Forest Resource Management from Clemson University.

Sabo and his wife Christina reside in Macon with their son. With his extensive experience and dedication to forestry management, Sabo is expected to lead GFC towards continued success in preserving and protecting Georgia's forests.
