ATLANTA ~ Governor Brian P. Kemp has announced the latest recipients of grants for the Rural Workforce Housing Initiative, which will provide over $5 million in infrastructure development and support 140 housing units in three communities. These grants were awarded to communities that demonstrated strong collaboration and partnership with real estate developers.

In his statement, Governor Kemp emphasized the importance of supporting communities experiencing economic growth by providing them with the necessary infrastructure. He congratulated the communities of Hawkinsville, Hinesville, and Waynesboro on their success and expressed his confidence that these grants will further advance the prosperity of hardworking Georgians.

The Rural Workforce Housing Initiative was first introduced in Governor Kemp's 2023 State of the State Address as a means to develop much-needed workforce housing in communities across Georgia. The Georgia General Assembly has approved a total of $91.7 million for this initiative, with $35.7 million allocated in the Amended Fiscal Year 2023 budget, an additional $50 million in the Amended Fiscal Year 2024 budget, and $6 million for Fiscal Year 2025.

Christopher Nunn, Commissioner of the Department of Community Affairs, stressed the importance of providing affordable housing for workers in order to sustain Georgia's economic growth and prosperity. He reaffirmed their commitment to helping these communities implement strategic solutions for workforce housing.

In order to be eligible for these grants from OneGeorgia Authority, applicants had to meet certain requirements and demonstrate community commitment by leveraging other funding sources. All funds must be used within two years from the date of award and are subject to state laws, regulations, and policies.

The City of Hawkinsville was awarded a grant of $2,260,505 to construct road, water, and sewer infrastructure improvements for 58 new single-family housing units within the 220 McCormick Avenue Subdivision. The city is contributing $70,000 while Hive Construction is contributing $124,000 towards this project.

The City of Hinesville received a grant of $1,098,188 to develop 31 detached townhomes within the Court Street Project. This will involve the construction of street, drainage, water, and sewer infrastructure, with the city contributing $591,910 and the developer partner contributing $420,200.

In Waynesboro, the City was awarded $2,496,190 in OneGeorgia funds to construct infrastructure for 51 new housing units in St. George Crossing. The first phase of this development will include 27 single-family homes and 24 townhomes on a 190-acre tract. The city is contributing $100,000 while the developer will contribute $423,810. Future phases of development will include multi-family and senior housing as well as retail and commercial spaces.

This investment by OneGeorgia Authority will not only provide much-needed housing for workers but also stimulate economic growth in these communities through the development of new residential and commercial spaces. The success of these projects is a testament to the strong collaboration between local governments and real estate developers in Georgia.
