NEW YORK - GeorgiaChron -- On April 20, 2022 Ntozake Shange's Chorepoem, 'for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf' opened on broadway for a 20 week run at the Booth Theater located at 222 W 45th St, New York, NY 10036. This mainstay of the African American Theater tradition has been reimagined under the directorship and choreography of Camille A. Brown. On Monday April 25, 2022 this run has been nominated for 3 Drama League Awards. On Tuesday April 26, 2022 it was nominated for 3 Outer Critics Circle Awards.
Greg Evans of Deadline.com says that, "Shange called her mix of spoken word set to dance and movement a "choreopoem," a word as lovely and evocative today as it was when for colored girls (as it's often abbreviated) began Off Broadway performances back in 1974."

Laura Collins-Hughes of the New York Times identifies this run as a critic's pick and says that this production of For colored girls is a "Broadway homecoming celebration that you will not want to miss!"
When Ntozake Shange wrote "for colored girls" she called wanted to highlight the spirit, trials, tribulations and humanity of black women. She wanted their humanity to resonate with all audiences regardless of culture or creed, and this is why all of the main characters are identified by the color that they wear and not by name. In fact this run of the play starts with a recording of speaking in her own words, encouraging the audience to consider all of the stories "all the stories we could tell" about "little colored girls".
This run of this iconic play stars the following:
Cast and Crew:
Lady in Blue: Stacey Sargeant
Lady in Brown: Tendayi Kuumba, late of David Byrne's American Utopia
Lady in Green Okwui Okpokwasili
Lady in Orange Amara Granderson
Lady in Purple Alexandria Wailes
Lady in Red Kenita R. Miller
