From the Gridiron to Giving Back: Mughelli's Journey Reflects Resilience and Motivation to Inspire Future Generations
ATLANTA - GeorgiaChron -- In an earlier announcement, Wake Forest University revealed that former NFL Pro Bowl fullback Ovie Mughelli will be inducted into the 2025 Wake Forest Sports Hall of Fame, a representation of the best of Wake Forest's long tradition of excellence in sports. Mughelli, a standout on the gridiron for the Demon Deacons and considerably the best fullback in Wake Forest history, joins an esteemed class of inductees in recognition of his outstanding contributions to Wake Forest football and his remarkable career in the National Football League.
During his time at Wake Forest, Mughelli played in 43 games and rushed for 530 yards on 137 carries, earning fourth most touchdowns in a season. His blocking skills were instrumental in helping some of the top leading rushers in school history, including Morgan Kane, Tarence Williams and Chris Barclay, achieve remarkable success. In his senior season, he emerged as one of the nation's top fullbacks, scoring 12 touchdowns and helping lead the Demon Deacons to a 7-6 record and a berth in the Seattle Bowl. His stellar performance earned him First Team All-ACC honors.

Mughelli's talent and hard work paved the way for his selection as the 134th overall pick in the 2003 NFL Draft by the Baltimore Ravens, becoming only the second fullback selected in the franchise's history. His 10-year NFL career included a tenure with the Baltimore Ravens, Atlanta Falcons, and St. Louis Rams. Mughelli earned two All-Pro honors and a Pro Bowl selection as a Falcons, further solidifying his legacy as one of the premier fullbacks in the league.
Mughelli's success on the football field was matched by his commitment to giving back. Named the Atlanta Falcons Walter Payton Man of the Year, he has championed numerous philanthropic efforts, particularly in education having earned his Executive MBA, and continues to inspire future generations through his dedication to making a positive impact.
