ATLANTA - GeorgiaChron -- For the ninth year in a row, SEM Link is participating in Give 8/28, a national day of giving that highlights the work of Black-led, Black-benefiting organizations across the country. Hosted by the Young Black & Giving Back Institute, Give 8/28 takes place on August 28 and is the only giving day dedicated exclusively to the importance of Black-led nonprofits, which receive just 2% of institutional philanthropic dollars from foundations. Rooted in a commitment to serve and powered by the collective action of people who care, Give 8/28 brings together donors, nonprofits, and partners to invest in Black-led change nationwide, supporting grassroots work in education and mentoring, economic empowerment, policy advocacy, health and wellness, and more.

This year, SEM Link's Give 8/28 campaign will raise funds for its Community STEM Program and STEM Literacy Program. The Community STEM Program brings hands-on STEM activities directly into the neighborhoods, hosting programming in public libraries, parks, and recreation centers to expose youth to STEM close to home. The STEM Literacy Program, part of SEM Link's broader STEM Literacy and Research Program, donates culturally relevant STEM books to community spaces and pairs early learners with an adult who reads them a STEM book and leads a related hands-on activity. The program also hosts workshops that engage youth in STEM creative writing, using formats such as comic strips, graphic novels, and short stories.

SEM Link's campaign kicks off Friday, August 21, with a countdown to Give 8/28 on our social media platforms. Early giving begins Wednesday, August 26, ahead of the giving day itself on August 28.

"We're excited to participate in Give 8/28 once again, and we've taken part every year since its inception," said Tokiwa T. Smith, Founder and Executive Director of SEM Link. "The work of small, Black-led nonprofits often goes unnoticed because we don't have the resources larger organizations have to promote what we do. This day of giving lets us highlight our work and our impact in the community, encouraging our current donors to keep investing in us and inviting new donors to include SEM Link in their charitable giving."
