ATLANTA, March 17, 2025 ~ Piedmont Oncology Welcomes New Whitaker Endowed Chief, Dr. Walter J. Curran Jr.
Piedmont Healthcare is proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Walter J. "Wally" Curran Jr., M.D., FACR, FASCO as the new Whitaker Endowed Chief of Piedmont Oncology. This prestigious title is made possible by the Piedmont Foundation's Whitaker Endowment, a fund established by the Atlanta community in honor of renowned cancer surgeon, Dr. William Whitaker.
Dr. Curran's exceptional contributions to advancing oncology care in Georgia have earned him this bestowed title. He joined Piedmont in January 2024 as the inaugural Chief of Piedmont Oncology and has since been dedicated to transforming cancer care and making it one of the nation's leading community-based programs.
According to Charles L. Brown III, M.D., CEO of Piedmont's Physician Enterprise, "Dr. Curran has dedicated his career to cancer patient care and research at both local and global levels." The Whitaker Endowment will allow Piedmont to further enhance their cancer care services and provide patients with cutting-edge treatments and therapies.

The endowment was specifically created to support the growth and success of Piedmont Oncology throughout Georgia. It will fund new oncology programs and other strategic initiatives that will keep cancer care at the forefront of innovation within communities.
Kelly Kerner, Chief Philanthropy Officer for Piedmont Healthcare, emphasized the importance of philanthropy in their nonprofit system: "With this support, Piedmont continues to change lives through high-quality, cutting-edge oncology care across all the communities we serve."
Dr. Curran expressed his gratitude for this generous gift from both the Piedmont Atlanta community and the Whitaker family: "Exceptional cancer care happens when a patient is seen by professionals who relentlessly seek to provide the best care." He also stressed the importance of offering clinical research opportunities to as many patients as possible.
